CINCINNATI, Ohio – Syracuse junior Katie Rowan scored nine points and became the second women’s lacrosse player in the school history to register 200 career points in the No. 5/6 Orange’s 23-4 victory at Cincinnati on Sunday, March 30. Rowan led the offensive outburst with six goals, while Breanna Stiff, Christina Dove and Kristin Brady scored three goals each.
Rowan put Syracuse (8-2) on the scoreboard when she found the back of the net on a free position 36 seconds into the game. After the Bearcats (1-8) tied the score on Stephanie Cox’s goal at the 2:22 mark, Rowan scored her second goal a minute later, starting Syracuse on a 16-0 scoring run. Rowan and Stiff scored three goals each during the stretch. UC’s Lindsey Marshall stopped the scoring run with a goal with 55 seconds remaining, however the Orange led 17-2 at halftime.
Marshall scored the first two goals of the second half to cut Syracuse’s lead to 17-4, but that was as close as the Bearcats would get. The Orange scored the final six goals of the game for the 23-4 final. It marked the sixth game this season Syracuse has scored 20 or more goals, including the third time in its last four contests.
With an assist on Jackie DePetris’ goal that gave SU a 13-1 lead, Rowan joined Leigh-Ann Zimmer (2001-04) as the only players in school history to record 200 career points. Rowan now has 203 points in her career and ranks second on the all-time scoring list. She needs 30 points to tie Zimmer for the top spot. With three assists against the Bearcats, Rowan also climbed into second place on the career assists list with 63. Kim Wayne ranks first on the all-time list with 85 (2000-03).
Syracuse’s offensive attack was well balanced as eight different players scored multiple goals. In addition to hat tricks by four Orange, DePetris, Megan Mosenson, Elise Terraciano and Catherine Rodriguez scored two goals each. Marshall led Cincinnati with three goals.
The Orange outshot Cincinnati, 53-10, and picked up 36 ground balls to 19 for the Bearcats. Syracuse held a 15-14 advantage in draw controls, and caused 29 Cincinnati turnovers, which is a new single-game school record. UC goalkeepers Haley Marvine and Jen Mott combined for 16 saves, while Liz Hogan had three saves for SU.
Syracuse will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Albany to take on the Great Danes at 4 p.m.
