LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Orange softball team is back on the road for two BIG EAST doubleheaders, starting at Louisville on Friday, April 11 at 5 p.m. and then at South Florida on Sunday, April 13 at noon. Syracuse, which is coming off a pair of victories against Niagara on April 8, will try and improve on its 14-19 record and its 5-3 conference mark. Louisville, which is tied for third in the BIG EAST, owns a 20-14 record and is 6-2 in the conference. The first-place Bulls carry a 32-13 mark and a 7-1 BIG EAST record.

Earlier this week, sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner orchestrated two victories against the Purple Eagles (6-4 and 2-1) and combined to strike out 13 batters in 11.2 innings of work. During the second game, she whiffed a season-high 10 batters for the program's 37th all-time, 10-plus strikeout performance. Gardner was only two shy of tying her personal best, which was a 12-stikeout outing against McNeese State in 2007.
Freshman first baseman Tawni Irvine tallied the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth when she singled up the middle for her first career RBI. She was 2-for-3. This season the rookie has tallied 12 hits, including two doubles. Classmate and outfielder Rachel Helman is also enjoying success in her first year as an Orange by batting .286 with 14 hits, a double and two RBI.
Batting eight points above her career average, senior outfielder Rachel Tilford is third on the team with a .288 mark with 30 hits, four doubles and 11 RBI. She trails only junior catcher Amy Kelley's .362 average and junior shortstop Jamie Kelling's .300 average.
The Cardinals have lost two of three, but have won eight of 10. They split with Rutgers on April 6 with a 6-0 loss and a 9-2 victory. Melissa Roth leads the team with a .386 batting average, which ranks third in the BIG EAST. She has totaled a team-best 39 hits and 31 runs. Kassie Stanfill is second with a .313 average and is tied for second with 31 hits. Kristen Wadwell has posted a 2.00 ERA with 96 strikeouts en route to a 10-9 record.
The Bulls were handed their first BIG EAST loss of the season when they split with Villanova on April 6. They won the first, 9-6, but lost the second, 2-1, snapping a seven-game winning streak. JoJo Medina was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after going 7-for-11 with four RBI, two doubles and a home run. Kit Dunbar is first on the team and fifth in the conference with a .378 average. The three-headed pitching attack of Capri Catalona (0.75), Courtney Mosch (1.21) and Cristi Ecks (1.21) are third, fourth and fifth in the conference for ERA.
