PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Syracuse University junior Katie Rowan scored seven points, breaking her own single-season scoring record, to lead the fifth-ranked Orange women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory at Rutgers on Saturday. Rowan now has 87 points this season, surpassing her record of 86 points she set last season in 19 games. With the win, Syracuse (11-2, 4-0) clinched at least a tie for the BIG EAST regular-season title.
Rowan has set the school single-season marks for points (87) and assists (41) in just 13 games this season. She is 13 shy of the single-season goals scored mark, and is just five points away from becoming the Orange's all-time leading scorer.
Rowan led a balanced offensive attack as five players scored at least three goals. Halley Quillinan tallied a game-high four goals to go with one assist, while Rowan had three goals and four assists. Megan Mosenson recorded three goals and three assists, while Christina Dove and Kristin Brady had three goals each. Awehiyo Thomas added two goals for the Orange.
"As we finish the regular-season, we're looking to possess more, be smarter and manage the clock more," said head coach Gary Gait. "Hopefully we can continue to do a better job of that."
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead as Mosenson scored a pair of goals and Rowan added one to give SU a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. After Nina Fankoski got Rutgers (7-7, 2-2) on the scoreboard with a goal at the 19:22 mark, Brady scored her first goal of the day with 17:21 on the clock. Brady's goal sparked the Orange offense, as it went on to score five unanswered goals before Michelle Poole halted the run with a goal with 2:24 remaining. Each team scored in the final minute of the half, as Syracuse went into the intermission with a 10-3 lead.
The Scarlet Knights scored the first goal of the second half to cut the Orange's lead to 10-4 with 27:24 remaining. The Orange responded with seven straight goals, including a pair from both Quillinan and Dove, to take control of the game. Poole scored her second goal of the contest with 3:18 remaining to end Rutgers scoring drought with 3:18 remaining. Rowan scored Syracuse's final goal of the contest on a free position with 1:20 remaining for her seventh point of the game and 87th of the season for the single-season school mark. RU's Brooke Cantwell scored the game's final goal with 22 seconds remaining for the 18-6 final.
The Orange defense forced 20 Rutgers turnovers and limited the Scarlet Knights to 19 shots compared to 39 for Syracuse. The Orange picked up 28 ground balls, including a career-high five by Lindsay Rogers, to 16 for Rutgers, and won 15-of-26 draw controls. Syracuse goalkeeper Liz Hogan had four saves.
The victory gives the Orange at least a tie for the BIG EAST regular-season crown. Syracuse has one league game remaining, at Loyola on April 19. The Orange shared the 2007 regular-season title with Georgetown.
Syracuse tries to extend its four-game winning streak on Wednesday when it hosts Colgate at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse's five seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Admission is free.
