SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Michael Cox, a member of the men’s track & field team, was honored at the Our Time Has Come Scholarship Campaign Recipients Reception on April 3 at the home of Syracuse University Chancellor Dr. Nancy Cantor. He was one of 19 graduating seniors recognized at the annual ceremony.
Cox, a history major enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded the DeLuca Charitable Trust Scholarship and the Undergraduate Black and Hispanic Scholarship.
“This scholarship really means a lot to me,” Cox said. “I think it’s truly another testament to the versatility that a student-athlete can display. It’s great to be recognized for my hardwork, performance in the classroom and extracurricular activities.”
The DeLuca Charitable Trust Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student and was first given during the 1997-98 academic year. The Undergraduate Black and Hispanic Scholarship, in its 18th year, honors African American and Latino students.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Cox is in his second season with the Orange track & field team. He earned Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recognition following the fall 2007 semester.
Associate Vice President Larry Martin, from the Office of Program Development, provided the evening’s welcome. Senior Camila E. Sotomayor, recipient of the Frank Carmona Scholarship and the Undergraduate Black and Hispanic Scholarship, delivered the recipient’s remarks.
In 1987, former SU basketball great David Bing ’66 chaired the Our Time Has Come Scholarship Campaign to raise $1 million to establish endowed scholarships primarily for African American and Latino students. At its conclusion, the campaign raised $1.2 million and through the generosity of alumni, friends, foundations and corporations, seven endowed scholarships were established.
On November 6, 1996, a new five-year campaign was officially launched. The goal of the Our Time Has Come Scholarship Campaign: Phase II, was to raise an additional $2.2 million. Phase II was part of Syracuse University’s $300 million Commitment to Learning Campaign. At the conclusion of the campaign on December 31, 2000, $3.1 million was raised in donations and pledges.
To date, 845 scholarships worth approximately $2 million have been awarded. For academic year 2007-08, 17 scholarships were awarded to 60 recipients.
