SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Student-Athletes Across Borders (SAAB) hosted an “International Soiree” on Thursday night at Manley Field House. Student-athletes and international student organizations from all over the globe had the opportunity to showcase their country’s culture through display tables, entertainment and food.
“I think it went off really well and about as good as we could have planned,” said SAAB President Jillian Drouin, a member of track & field team and native of Ontario. “The food was great, the performances were great and the table displays really worked out. I think this is something that can get bigger and more popular down the road. The first time is always the hardest, but now that it’s been done, the word is going to spread.”
SAAB extended the invitation to all of the international organizations on campus. Junior Terry Marshall, a member of the track & field team and native of Barbados emceed the soiree. Marshall, also serving as the organization’s Vice President, anticipates the event being more a successful next semester.
“We made an evening out of it,” said Marshall. “There was certainly an obstacle with this being our first event, but the performances were great. We had some student-athletes come out and a few of my teammates, which I respected a lot. Certainly next fall we are going to have another one that is even bigger and better.”
The festivities began around 7:30 p.m. with the Syracuse University West African Dance Ensemble. Following, the Kalabash Dance Group and Orange Kendo performed. Asian Dance Troupe and guitarist Santiago Bueno closed out the entertainment.
Attendees participated in fun activities and games testing geographical knowledge. The event was free and opened to the Syracuse community.
SAAB was created in 2007 in hopes of creating a support and connection network for international student-athletes at Syracuse. The Syracuse University Athletics Department is comprised of 51 international student-athletes representing 17 different countries.
