TAMPA, Fla. – The Syracuse tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss in the quarterfinal round against third-seeded No. 42 South Florida at the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday. The loss pushes the Orange to the consolation bracket of the postseason contest.

TAMPA, Fla. – The Syracuse tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss in the quarterfinal round against third-seeded No. 42 South Florida at the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday. The loss pushes the Orange to the consolation bracket of the postseason contest.
South Florida sprinted to the match’s first point behind a three-match sweep in doubles play. Sophomores Chelsea Jones and Ashley Spicer, and junior Maria Vasilyeva and freshman team captain Christina Tan endured 8-3 losses at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively.
The rookie duo of Simone Kalhorn and Jacquelynn Tang suffered an 8-1 setback at the No. 1 position.
In singles competition, the Bulls tallied four wins in six matches before the contest was suspended. Tan endured a 6-1, 6-2 setback at the No 1 position against Janette Bejikova. Spicer and Jones were downed 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 and the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Tang was dealt a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the No. 6 position.
Kalhorn’s match with Jessica Zok at No. 2 was halted mid-way through the second set with the USF having already won the match. Vasilyeva posted a 6-2 win in the first set and was ahead 3-1 in the second set before her match against Allyn Mueller at No. 3 was suspended.
In day two action, top-seeded No. 20 Notre Dame posted a 4-0 sweep against eighth-seeded Rutgers, and second-seeded No. 39 Louisville bested seventh-seeded St. John’s, 4-1. In the afternoon session, fifth-seeded No. 61 DePaul tallied a 4-1 win against fourth-seeded Marquette.
The Orange is placed in the fifth place bracket and continues postseason play on Saturday, April 18 against seventh-seeded St. John’s at noon.
