TAMPA, Fla. – The sixth-seeded Syracuse tennis team (11-14) concluded the 2008 season following a 4-2 loss against seventh-seeded St. John’s (12-11) on day three of the BIG EAST Tournament at the University South Florida. The Orange finishes tied for seventh place with eighth-seeded Rutgers following the Scarlet Knights’ 4-3 loss against fourth-seeded Marquette.
The Red Storm tallied two of three doubles matches before winning three of five complete singles contests for the win.
Junior Maria Vasilyeva tallied her team-best 17th singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position against Emily Barnett. She finishes with a 12-2 mark against BIG EAST opponents and won 13 of her last 17 matches. Vasilyeva avenged a mid-season loss against St. John’s Ira Aleksova on March 29.
Vasilyeva and freshman team captain Christina Tan posted an 8-4 win against Ashley Harper and Gabi Gasiunaite at the No. 3 spot. The duo finished 6-5 overall, 5-4 versus conference opponents and was victorious in six of its last eight contests. Vasilyeva continues her climb to the century mark in wins, tallying numbers 91 and 92 against the Red Storm.
Sophomore Ashley Spicer rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 slot against Mariana Chachua. She finishes 15-10 overall in singles play and has rebounded from a mid-season slump with seven wins in her last nine tries. Spicer claimed 26 overall victories in her debut season with the Orange after winning 15 with Washington State in 2007.
Spicer and doubles partner Chelsea Jones endured a narrow 8-6 setback at the No. 2 position against Aleksova and Mata Zivcicova. Jones’ singles contest with Aleksova was suspended in the second set with the match’s result decided. The Orange sophomore posted a 6-4 win in the first stanza. Jones reaches the 25-win plateau overall after posting eight as a freshman last season.
Tan suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback against Zivcicova at the top spot, while rookie Simone Kalhorn endured a 6-3, 6-4 loss at the No. 2 position against Alison Adamski. Freshman Jacquelynn Tang was dealt a 6-4, 6-3 loss against Jenny Yonkus at No. 6. It was just the third loss in eight singles matches for Tang.
Tang and Kalhorn suffered an 8-1 loss at the No. 1 position against Adamski and Barnett.
The Orange finishes with an 11-14 overall mark and an 8-7 record against teams from the BIG EAST conference in head coach Luke Jensen’s second season. Syracuse boasted an 8-1 record at home and was 10-0 in matches after winning the doubles point.
