
Thumbs Up for the Orange: Syracuse Earns No. 1 Seed in BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse women's lacrosse team has earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and will take on No. 4 seed Rutgers (7-9, 2-3) in the first semifinal on Friday, April 25 at 5:30 p.m. in South Bend, Ind. The Orange (13-2, 5-0) went undefeated in league play to claim it first outright BIG EAST regular-season title.
No. 2 seed Notre Dame (11-5, 4-1) will face No. 3 seed Georgetown (10-5, 3-2) in the second semifinal. The title game is slated for noon on Sunday, April 27. The championship will be played in Notre Dame Stadium, home of the Irish football team. The tournament champion receives the league's automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Syracuse, under the direction of first-year head coach Gary Gait, has won a season-high six straight and 11 of its last 12 contests. The Orange's victory at Loyola was its 13th of the year, tying the school record for most wins in a season. SU became the sixth team in the eight-year history of BIG EAST women's lacrosse to post an undefeated record in conference action.
The Orange is going for is second-straight tournament title. Syracuse won the inaugural championship played in the Carrier Dome last season. SU defeated Rutgers, 13-7, in the semifinals, and Georgetown, 12-7 in the final game.
Both semifinal games will be streamed live online at www.bigeast.tv. CBS College Sports will televise the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship game live at noon.
Syracuse has one more regular-season game remaining before the conference tournament. The Orange plays at Cornell on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
