Rowan and Rogers Earn BIG EAST Player of the Year Honors; Seven Earn All-Conference Accolades

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Katie Rowan was named the BIG EAST Conference Attack Player of the Year and sophomore Lindsay Rogers received the Defensive Player of the Year award at the annual BIG EAST Conference Awards Banquet held on Thursday, April 24 in South Bend, Ind. It marks the first time in the program's history that it has had two Players of the Year in the same season.
Rowan and Rogers were two of a school-record five members of the Orange named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, the most for any school in the conference. Joining the pair were sophomores Christina Dove and Halley Quillinan and freshman goalkeeper Liz Hogan. Rowan, Dove and Quillinan were unanimous selections. In addition, seniors Kristin Brady and Christina Gibson were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
The 2008 season has been a historic one for Rowan. She broke the Syracuse single-season scoring record with 104 points, making her the only player in school history to score 100 points in a season. Rowan also broke the single-season record with 51 assists, and her 59 goals tie the school mark she set last season. In addition, Rowan has become Syracuse's career leader in points (252) and assists (88). She is just seven goals away from tying the career mark for goals scored (164). Rowan leads the nation in scoring and scoring average.
Rogers helped anchor the Orange defense which allowed just 7.8 goals per game and held its opponents to less than 10 goals 11 times in 16 games. Rogers recorded career highs this season with 18 ground balls, 28 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers.
Dove is second on the team in scoring (73 pts.) and goals scored (58), while her 4.40 points per game and 3.53 goals per game rank third in the BIG EAST. Dove's 73 points are the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, and her 58 goals rank third on the single-season record list. In her career, Dove has registered 131 points, which is good for seventh place on SU's career scoring list, and tallied 105 goals, the sixth-highest total in school history.
Quillinan ranks third on the team and fourth in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3.43) and points per game (4.29). Her 52 goals this season tie her for fourth on the school single-season record list, while her 64 points is the fifth-highest single-season total in the program's history. She also leads the team with 39 draw controls. Quillinan has recorded career highs in every statistical category, including assists (12), ground balls (22) and caused turnovers (19).
Hogan leads the BIG EAST and ranks sixth in the nation with a 7.62 goals against average. She is the only freshman in the nation to rank among the top 20 in that category. Hogan has started every game for the Orange this season and recorded 121 saves. She reached double figures in saves in five contests.
Brady has posted career highs with 32 goals and 12 assists. She ranks third on the team in ground balls with 28 and third in draw controls with 31. Brady scored her 100th career point this season, making her the 11th player in school history to reach that milestone.
Gibson, who started all 16 games for the Orange defense, leads the team with a career-high 24 caused turnovers. She is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST with 1.53 caused turnovers per game. Gibson also has 22 ground balls and seven draw controls this season.
The No. 5/3 Orange puts its seven-game winning streak on the line Friday when it faces Rutgers in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship at 5:30 p.m. in Notre Dame, Ind. Syracuse is the No. 1 seed in the tournament, while Rutgers earned the No. 4 seed. The championship game is set for Sunday at noon.
