SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Jacquelynn Tang posted her 13th singles win of the season in Syracuse’s (10-12, 7-5) 6-1 loss at No. 20 Notre Dame (15-7, 3-0) in the regular season finale on Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavillion. The loss ends the Orange’s season-best four-match win streak.
Tang claimed the Orange’s lone point in the match following a resilient 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (10-12), 1-0 (11-9) win at the No. 6 position against Denise Ellison. With the team match decided in favor of the hosts, the rookie trailed 8-5 in the tiebreaker before rallying with four straight points en route to the victory.
Tang ends her first collegiate campaign with a 13-8 overall record, including a 7-4 mark against BIG EAST opponents. She is 7-3 in her last 10 matches dating back to March 1.
The Fighting Irish earned its ninth win in as many contests after sweeping the match’s doubles point. Sophomores Chelsea Jones and Ashley Spicer, riding a five-match win streak heading into Sunday, moved to the No. 1 spot, but suffered an 8-3 setback against Brook Buck and Kali Krisik. It marked the duo’s first loss since March 14 versus Central Florida.
The doubles pairing of Tang and freshman Simone Kalhorn played its first match of the season at No. 2 position and endured an 8-1 setback against Cosmina Ciobanu and Colleen Rielley. Junior Maria Vasilyeva and freshman team captain Christina Tan suffered an 8-2 loss at the No. 3 spot against Katie Potts and Denise Ellison.
Spicer’s five-match win streak came to an end against Krisik at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-1. The Washington State transfer finishes her first regular season at Syracuse with a 13-9 record, including a 13-4 mark in the four spot.
Jones’ four-match ride was snapped following a 6-2, 6-2 setback versus Potts at the No. 5 position. She had rebounded from a dramatic third-set loss against Pittsburgh to win a season-best five in a row. Jones owns a 12-9 mark at the conclusion of the regular season.
Vasilyeva ends the regular season as a winner in 11 of her last 14 following a 6-4, 6-0 loss against Rielley at No. 3. She is 7-3 in her last 10 matches.
Tan endured a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the top spot against Buck, while Kalhorn suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback versus Ciobanu at the No. 2 position.
The 2008 BIG EAST Tournament will be held April 17-20 on the campus of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. Selections and tournament seedings will be announced Monday, April 14.
