Syracuse is ending its ninth season on the diamond and is on the verge of its fifth all-time BIG EAST Championship appearance and its fourth consecutive. Syracuse clinched its spot in this year's postseason with a sweep at Pittsburgh on April 26. Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling produced a single in the sixth inning that broke the deadlock and gave SU a 5-3 win.
During game two, senior pitcher Chanel Roehner cruised through the first six innings and at one point retired 11 of 12 batters. In the bottom of the seventh with SU up 2-0 and Pitt facing its final out, Panther right fielder Stiley doubled off the very top of the leftfield fence to score a run. But Roehner responded with a strikeout to end the game.
Syracuse is currently enjoying a six-game homestand, which is tied for the longest of the season. The Orange went 4-2 during a three doubleheader stretch from April 4-8. SU is 8-4 overall with a 6-2 conference record at home this season. All-time the Orange has won 10 or more home games three times in its history. The last time was in 2006 when the team won a school record 14.
Earlier this week the Blue Demons knocked off the No. 1 team in the country, Alabaman, 1-0, in eight innings and followed with a 5-3 victory against No. 11 Northwestern in five innings on the same day. Before the week started sophomore All-America pitcher Becca Heteniak was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week and the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week. Heteniak saw action in each of DePaul’s eight wins during that week, going 7-0 in the circle and adding a save against Connecticut. She tossed 43.1 innings, allowing just 17 hits and two earned runs for a 0.32 ERA. She held opposing batters to a stingy .114 batting average.
