SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University women’s lacrosse head coach Gary Gait announced on Wednesday that Jill Cammett, Sarah Holden, Kelsey Nangle, Janelle Stegeland and Heather Wentz have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Orange next season. The group is part of the first recruiting class for Gait, who took over the helm of the Syracuse program in August, 2007.
"I look to this class to fill some needs to continue to build the Syracuse program," Gait said. "The group includes several student-athletes from the Syracuse area. It will be great to see them play in the Carrier Dome."
Cammett, a native of Norwell, Mass., is a four-year starter at Norwell High School. She helped Norwell to back-to-back league and Division II state championship in 2005-06. As a junior, Cammett was named an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star, the South Shore League MVP and a league All-Star after scoring 78 goals and dishing out 23 assists. A Syracuse native, Holden is a senior at Marcellus High School. Last season she was a US Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-America selection and a All-CNY Third Team honoree. A team captain, Holden was Marcellus’ 2007 team MVP and earned first-team all-league honors for the third-straight year. She was also selected to the All-CNY Second Team as a sophomore. Holden was a member of Marcellus’ soccer and basketball teams, and earned first-team All-CNY honors in both sports.
Nangle, who hails from Auburn, N.Y., is a member of the Skaneateles High School squad that has won two state, three sectional and three league titles. Last season she earned a spot on the All-CNY Second Team and was a first-team all-league selection after recording 52 goals and 39 assists. Stegeland comes to SU from Cortland, N.Y. where she helped Cortland High School to a share of the 2007 New York State Class B Freedom Division title, scoring 53 goals and dishing out 18 assists. Stegeland is a three-time first-team all-league honoree. In addition, she played on Cortland’s field hockey and basketball squads.
Wentz is from West Chester, Pa., and is a senior at Unionville High School. Last season Wentz was a first-team All-Southern Chester County League selection and a second-team all-area honoree.
