SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men and women’s track & field teams resume the 2008 outdoor campaign, following a two-week hiatus, at the NCAA East Regional hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. The Orange will be represented by 11 student-athletes in the Sunshine State, competing in 10 different events.
“This is the point in our season where we really feel like we can hit our stride,” said third-year head coach Chris Fox. “We’ve prepared throughout the year for the stretch run of our outdoor season and this is the weekend to put everything together.”
Fox and the Orange are looking to build off the momentum built at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, hosted by Princeton on May 17-18. Both Syracuse squads cracked the top 10 in the standings, including a fourth-place finish out of 49 scoring teams for the men. The SU women placed seventh out of 47 teams that tallied at least one point.
Seniors Kyle Heath and Ramon Sosa led the Orange individual efforts, capturing event titles in the 3000m steeplechase and the 110m hurdles, respectively. Heath totaled a top time of 8:50.82 en route to his second first-place finish in as many weekends. Sosa led the field with a time of 13.88 seconds, claiming his second IC4A title in consecutive championships.
Heath, who will compete in the 3000m steeplechase at the regional, owns the Syracuse school record with a time of 8:48.60 and was crowned the conference champion at Villanova on May 3. He continues to fashion a stellar track & field season, which includes garnering the program record in the indoor mile (4:01.68). Heath ran the anchor leg of the Orange’s third-place finish in the four-by-mile relay in the Championship of America heat at the Penn Relays.
Sosa, making his second appearance at the regional in as many years, claimed All-BIG EAST recognition with a time of 13.85 seconds, finishing second. He has claimed five of the Orange’s top time times in the 110m hurdles this season. Sosa tallied a time of 14.34 seconds at the 2007 regional in Gainesville, Fla.
After repeating as the BIG EAST champion in the heptathlon, senior Jillian Drouin will look to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the high jump. The 2007 All-American owns the Orange’s top six performances this season, all of which qualified for the regional championship. Drouin recorded a season-best leap of 1.82m as part of the heptathlon at the conference final.
Graduate Sheron Mark is the lone member of the Orange slated to compete in two events at Florida State. The veteran jumper posted four qualifying leaps in both in the long jump and triple jump during the outdoor regular season. Mark earned all-conference accolades in each event, totaling a season-high mark of 6.13m and finishing second in the long jump at Villanova. She owns a season-best tally of 12.96m in the triple jump.
Graduate Aulton Kohn, fresh off his championship performance in the 100m dash at the BIG EAST Championship, will look to reach the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year in the 200m dash. He finished second (21.28) at the IC4A Championship and owns a season-high performance of 21.16 seconds. Kohn posted a time of 20.73 seconds at the regional in 2007.
Junior Bernard Bush is the third and final field athlete to compete for the Orange in Tallahassee. He registered a qualifying leap of 7.40m and finished third in the long jump at the IC4A Championship. Bush failed to earn All-BIG EAST honors by one spot, posting a mark of 7.33m at Villanova.
Junior Jeff Scull and sophomore Dan Busby will don the Orange in the 5000m run. Scull owns the team’s top time this season, posting a tally of 14:02.39 at the Stanford Invitational. Busby earned an invitation to FSU with a time of 14:09.14 at the Larry Ellis Invitational.
Graduate Jordan Davis will challenge the 1500m run field, after totaling a time of 3:45.11at the Stanford Invitational.
