BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) has been picked as one of the five finalists for the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy which is presented to the nation’s top lacrosse player. Leveille joins Ben Rubeor (Virginia), Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) and Matt Danowski and Zack Greer of Duke as finalists for college lacrosse’s most prestigious award.
Leveille has had an All-America-caliber season. He ranks fifth nationally in points per game (4.57), eighth in goals per game (2.71) and ninth in assists per game (1.86). He leads the Orange in points (64), goals (38) and assists (26).
Leveille owns the nation’s second-longest scoring streak, having registered at least one point in each of the last 53 games. He has multiple points in every contest this season and ranks in the top 20 in Orange history in career points (196), goals (121) and assists (75). The 6-3 senior was voted a first-team, mid-season All-American by Inside Lacrosse and is a finalist for the 2008 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
At Syracuse’s second annual ‘Cuse Awards, Leveille was the recipient of two of the night’s biggest honors. He was selected as the male recipient of the Soladay Award and was also selected as SU's Male Athlete of the Year. The Soladay Award recognizes athletic and academic accomplishments, University/community service and leadership. It is named for the late Doris Soladay, who served as SU’s Associate Director of Athletics from 1975 through 1995, and it is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Department of Athletics to a current student-athlete. Leveille also beat out several of SU’s top men's student-athletes, including Hansen Woodruff (soccer) and Mike LeBlanc (track & field), to win Male Athlete of the Year.
Leveille and the other finalists are invited to the Tewaaraton Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 29 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. where the winner of this year’s award will be announced.
SU women's lacrosse player Katie Rowan will also be at the banquet. Rowan, also a Delmar, N.Y. product, is one of the five women's Tewaaraton Trophy finalists. Syracuse is the only school to have both a men's and women's finalist.
The men's team begins its quest for its 10th NCAA Championship on Sunday, May 11. The third-seeded Orange will host Canisius in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
