The softball and track and field teams were the only Orange Olympic sports in action over the weekend. Softball rallied for a key BIG EAST victory against Notre Dame to secure a sixth seed in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship. The track and field team competed at the BIG EAST Championships and three individuals took home first place prizes.
The Syracuse softball team dropped five out of the six games with a 8-7 come-from-behind victory against Notre Dame on Sunday. After losing to the Fighting Irish, 8-0, during game one, SU erased a four run deficit in the bottom of the sixth for its 12th conference victory of the season – the second highest total in program history. The Orange began the week with a 13-5 and 7-2 losses to Buffalo on Wednesday. No. 20 DePaul claimed to victories at the SU Softball Stadium, 9-0 and 5-1, on Friday.
Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling led the team this week with a .389 average behind seven hits, including two doubles. Freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs, who set a SU freshman record for games played and started (52), drove in a team-high five runs and totaled a home run and a double.
