SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the first time in school history, the Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad will host an NCAA Championship first-round contest, taking on Towson on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with nine straight wins and a 16-2 record. Towson enters Sunday’s contest with a 13-5 overall mark.
Tickets for Sunday’s game are on sale now at SUathletics.com and at the Carrier Dome Box Office. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students (with a valid ID) and youth ages 12 and under. Both schools earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championship by winning their conference tournaments. Syracuse claimed its second consecutive BIG EAST Championship crown with a 12-6 victory against Georgetown in the title game. Towson secured its place in the national tournament with a 16-7 win against William & Mary in the final game of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
ORANGE IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Syracuse is making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Orange has an all-time record of 1-6 in the national tournament. Syracuse made its fi rst appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2000, in just the third year of the program. That was the fi rst of four consecutive at-large bids for SU. After missing the tournament in 2004, Syracuse returned in 2005. The Orange earned its fi rst automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in 2007 after winning the inaugural BIG EAST Championship played in the Carrier Dome.
SYRACUSE REPEATS AS BIG EAST CHAMPIONS
Syracuse successfully defended its BIG EAST Championship to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The Orange earned the tournament’s No. 1 seed after winning the regular-season title and faced No. 4 seed Rutgers in the semifi nals. Sophomore Christina Dove set a championship single-game record with seven goals as the Orange defeated the Scarlet Knights, 22-7. The victory put Syracuse in the fi nal game against Georgetown in a rematch of the 2007 championship contest. The Orange used an 8-0 scoring run in the second half to overcome a 3-2 halftime defi cit and defeated the Hoyas, 12-6. The pair of wins improved Syracuse’s record to 4-0 in BIG EAST Tournament play.
