SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse women’s soccer head coach Phil Wheddon has not yet coached his first game for the Orange but has experienced success with another team, the United States Women’s National Team. Wheddon is an assistant coach and goalie coach for the team, which won the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in April after a dramatic penalty kick victory against Canada. The success of the team continued after it went 4-0 and captured the Queen’s Cup in June. The U.S. allowed only one goal in four games as it defeated Australia, Brazil, Italy and Canada to win the cup.
Up next for the team are two friendlies against Brazil. The first is July 13, in Commerce City, Colo. and the second is July 16, in San Diego, Calif. The team then has a long break before it begins its quest for Olympic gold in Beijing. The team will be in Group G along with Norway, Japan and New Zealand. The U.S. will have a target on its back because of its immense success in international tournaments. The team is the defending Olympic champion and also finished third in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007.
Wheddon joined the national team coaching staff in 2002 as the goalkeeper coach. During his tenure with the national team, the U.S placed third at the 2003 World Cup and won the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In 2005 he worked with the U.S. men’s team as an assistant and goalkeeper coach, helping the team to a victory in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He was also a coach on the team that participated in the 2006 World Cup before going back to the women’s coaching staff.
Wheddon was named the third head coach of the Syracuse women’s soccer program in March. The Orange opens the season on August 22 against Albany at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex.
