Commer City, Colo. -- The United State Women’s National soccer team defeated Brazil for the second time in less than a month, recording a 1-victory on Sunday, July 13 Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. A crowd of 15,071 watched as Amy Rodriguez’s goal in the 73rd minute proved to be all the offense that the U.S. needed.
Under the direction of goalkeeper coach and Syracuse women’s soccer head coach Phil Wheddon, U.S. goalies Hope Solo and Nicole Barnhart combined for three saves as the U.S. defense put forth a masterful defensive performance, allowing only four shots on goal. This was the second consecutive 1-0 win for the U.S. after its June 17 win in the Peace Queen Cup.
Rodriguez came on at halftime and made her presence felt. Abby Wambach unleashed a brilliant cross through the penalty area and the ball found Rodriguez after taking a slight deflection off the leg of a Brazilian defender. Rodriguez found herself open from 10 yards out and buried it in the back of the net.
Up next for the U.S. is a second game against Brazil on July 16 at Torero Stadium in San Diego, Calif. This game will be the Olympic send-off game for the team. The U.S. begins defense of its gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Aug. 6 against Norway.
