Volleyball Gears Up for Raiders and Tigers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team will travel to nearby Colgate University to compete in the Colgate Invitational on Saturday, September 20. The Orange face the Princeton Tigers at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Raiders at 5 p.m.
“Entering our last weekend before BIG EAST competition begins, our goal is to work together as a team and develop more consistency, while including two to three freshmen in the lineup,” head coach Jing Pu.
Scouting the Tigers (September 20, 1:30 p.m.)
The Princeton Tigers started their 2008 season off at the Rose Hill Classic. The Tigers went 3-0 at the tournament after facing Fordham (3-0), Stony Brook (3-1) and Manhattan (3-2).
Senior middle blocker Lindsey Ensign, recorded 46 kills in the Tiger’s sweep of the Rose Hill Classic. Ensign led the NCAA in attack percentage with a .549.
The Tigers faced Temple Wednesday night where they suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Atlantic 10 power. Freshman middle Cathryn Quinn led the Tigers with 15 kills and had a hitting percentage of .481 in the 3-2 loss to the Owls.
Scouting the Raiders (September 20, 5 p.m.)
The Colgate Classic opened the Raider’s 2008 season where they faced Kent State, West Virginia and Boston College finishing the weekend, 2-1. The Raiders went on to participate in both the Duke Invitational, where they went 1-2, and the Yale Invitational, where they went 0-3.
The Raiders got a much needed win when they faced their non-conference rival Binghamton. Colgate was led by senior RS Katrina Zawojski and sophomore middle blocker Casey Ritt who had 17 and 15 kills, respectively.
Colgate is the host of the tournament this weekend’s tournament during its Alumni Weekend. This will be the 55th meeting between the Raiders and the Orange.

Following Saturday’s matchups, the Orange will face the Cornell Big Red on September 24 at Cornell. On Sunday, September 28, Syracuse will open its BIG EAST schedule at Rutgers in a 2 p.m. match with the Scarlet Knights.
