Orange Starts Off 2008-09 at Brown Invitational

Sophomores Jacquelynn Tang and Christina Tan won the flight "B" doubles bracket for the Orange in its first tournament of the season. Syracuse heads off to the Big Apple to partake in the Billie Jean King Invitational this weekend.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team started off its fall schedule at the three-day Brown Invitational from Friday, Sept. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 28. Third-year head coach Luke Jensen led his team against Boston University, Brown University and Rutgers in three singles flights and two doubles flights.

Sophomores Christina Tan and Jacquelynn Tang won the flight "B" doubles bracket for Syracuse. In their first match, Tan and Tang defeated Boston University’s Yana Sadovskaya and Danielle Abraham, 8-1. The Orange duo clipped Brown’s Emily Ellis and Kathrin Sorokko by an 8-4 count in the semifinal match. Tan and Tang won the he flight "B" doubles bracket by beating Boston’s Liz Corrao and Vanessa Steiner, 8-6.

Junior Chelsea Jones and Tang picked up victories in the flight "B" singles bracket against Rutgers’ Morgan Ivey and Christine Tran by scores of 8-4 and 8-6, respectively.

Junior Ashley Spicer and freshman Emily Harman won a match in the flight "A" doubles bracket versus BU’s Cori Lefkowith and Petra Santini, 8-4. Sophomore Simone Kalhorn and Jones added a couple wins after defeating Marisa Schonfeldand and Julie Flanzer of Brown, 8-3, and Cori Lefkowith and Petra Santini, 8-4, in the flight "A" doubles group.

The Orange heads out to the Big Apple for another three-day affair at the Billie Jean King Invitational. SU’s second fall tournament starts on Friday, October 3.
