Scouting the Spartans (September 5, 4:30 p.m.)
The Michigan State Spartans opened their 2008 campaign on the road at the Nike Sooner Legends Invitational. The Spartans faced the Oklahoma Sooners first but despite a strong effort, the Sooners controlled the match and won, 3-1. Spartan sophomore Jenilee Rathje led MSU with 20 kills.
In the second match, MSU faced then No. 10 Cal Poly. The Cal Poly Mustangs took an 11-4 lead early but mistakes by the Mustangs allowed the Spartans to make a move and win set one. Set two and three were back and forth affairs with each team winning a set. The Mustangs came out ready to roll in the fourth set and fifth set and closed out the match with a 3-2 victory.
The Spartans again played a tough match against the Wichita State Shockers in their final match of the Sooner tournament. Despite another 20 kills from Rathje, the Spartans suffered a 3-1 setback to the Mustangs.
Scouting the Fightin’ Blue Hens (September 6, 1 p.m.)
The University of Delaware, the hosts of this weekend’s tournament, traveled to California to open its 2008 campaign. Facing host Cal State Fullerton in their first match of the season, the Fightin’ Blue Hens had the lead early on and took the match to five sets, but Fullerton managed to take control in the fifth set to win it, 3-2. Senior co-captain Kelly Gibson finished the contest with a match-high 23 kills and 14 digs. Gibson suffered a knee injury in the final set and remained out for the final two matches of Delaware’s opening weekend.
Several players stepped up their game to fill the hole left by Gibson, but the Fightin’ Blue Hens faced two tough teams in Pepperdine and UNC Greensboro. Sophomore Katie Dennehy posted a team-high 13 kills against Pepperdine and 10 against Greensboro and added three aces. However, it wasn’t enough without all-conference selection Gibson to overcome either opponent. Pepperdine and Greensboro both won their respective matches against the Fightin’ Blue Hens, 3-0.

New Hampshire opened its fall season at the James Madison/Days Inn Invitational. Up first for the Wildcats was host James Madison who proved to be a formidable foe winning the match, 3-0.
