Syracuse, N.Y. - During the Labor Day week, five Syracuse teams were in action. Field Hockey led the way with three victories, including a defeat of No. 10 Michigan State. After a 1-1 tie versus Colgate, the men’s soccer team went on to win the Mayor’s Cup Title with wins against UNC-Wilmington and Florida Gulf Coast. The volleyball team competed in the Delaware Invitational, posting a win against New Hampshire. Women’s soccer had a home match on Friday against Fordham and traveled to Niagara on Sunday. The men’s and women’s cross country team closed out its first weekend of competition at the Harry Lang Invitational claiming the top three individual spots.
With a 12-0 defeat of Colgate, the field hockey game set a new record for goals in a game. Senior Shannon Taylor set a record of her own when she tallied nine points in the game and tied the record for goals in a game with four. The Orange then traveled to Michigan where it posted a convincing 8-3 win over Central Michigan before meeting No. 10 Michigan State. With a 3-1 win against the Spartans on Sunday, the Orange field hockey team secured its second win of the season over a top-10 team. For the second-consecutive season, the team has started out 4-0 overall.

The Orange men’s soccer team is now 3-0-1 on the season. After posting a 1-1 tie with Colgate on Labor Day, the team traveled to Oneonta, N.Y. where it posted two shutouts to win the Mayor’s Cup. The Orange was the only team to win both of its matches in the four team field and only allowed seven shots total in the two games. Senior Kyle Hall earned the Jim Lennox Award as the tournament’s Offensive MVP after tallying the third goal against Florida Gulf Coast and the game-winner against UNC-Wilmington. Senior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia was selected as the Garth Stam Defensive MVP of the tournament.

The Syracuse volleyball team posted its second win of the season when it defeated New Hampshire on Saturday, 3-0, at the Delaware Invitational. All three opponents were tough teams, with Michigan State and Delaware making appearances in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Junior Sarah Morton posted 29 kills and nine total blocks in the three matches and garnered all-tournament accolades for her performance. Senior April Quigley tallied 75 assists on her way to moving into fifth place on the career assists chart with 2,731.

The Syracuse women’s soccer team began its weekend with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Fordham on Friday night. Junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded her first shutout of the season on her way to moving into second place on the career shutouts list with 13. In the Orange’s setback against Niagara, sophomore Megan Bellingham scored both of SU’s goals and now leads the team in scoring this season with four goals.

The men’s and women’s “B” cross country teams competed at the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate this weekend. The Orange claimed the top three individual spots and placed four runners in the top five in each of its respective. The men’s team closed out the day 25 points ahead of Colgate, while the women clipped the Raiders by 11 points. Top performers for the day included junior Curtis Bixler, who ran a 6k in 19:05.00, and freshman Lauryn MacFawn completed the 4,200-meter course with a time of 17:00.00.
