SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kristof Ongenaet (Ghent, Belgium) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 12, 2009.
Last week, the No. 11/9th ranked men's basketball team (16-1, 4-0) kept its untarnished BIG EAST record intact as the Orange took out DePaul, 85-68, on Jan. 7 and at Rutgers on Jan. 10, 82-66.
In front of 17,296 faithful against DePaul, Ongenaet scored two points and gathered three rebounds in five minutes of play.
The Belgian native has earned the fourth most starts for the Orange this season with 11. In 16 games of action, Ongenaet is fourth on the team with 4.1 rebounds per game. Ongenaet is also averaging 1.9 points per outing and has posted eight steals and six blocks on the defensive end.
Last season, Ongenaet played in 33 games, starting in 15 of them. As a member of the starting five, he averaged 6.3 points and 5.9 rebounds.
Ongenaet, an international relations major, and the rest of the Syracuse basketball travels to our nation's capital to tangle with BIG EAST rival No. 9/10 Georgetown on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Tip is set for 7 pm. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Orange returns to the Carrier Dome at 7 pm to combat No 13/13 Notre Dame at 7 pm. The women's basketball team improved its record to 13-3, 2-1 after escaping Cincinnati with a 71-70 nail biter at Fifth Third Arena on Saturday night. Syracuse earned its first BIG EAST victory after upending No. 17/16 Rutgers on Tuesday night at the Dome, 68-54. The Orange is perfect at home this season.
In the Rutgers upset, Murray contributed seven points and six rebounds in 18 minutes of action. At Cincinnati, the Rosedale native chimed in with 10 points and three boards in 25 minutes of time.
The junior forward has started 12-of-13 games she's played and is fifth on the squad in scoring with 6.3 points per game. In 20.8 minutes per contest, Murray has picked up 3.5 rebounds and has assembled the second best clip of 85.7 percent from the free throw line (18-21).
Murray, who transferred from Virginia Tech after her freshman campaign, was fifth on the team with 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in her first season with the orange.
Murray, who is majoring in finance, and the rest of the Orange returns to the Carrier Dome to put its home unbeaten streak on the line against Seton Hall on Tuesday, January 13 at 7 pm.
