The Syracuse Orange is heating up in the early-goings of the 2009 winter season. Currently, the men's and women's basketball teams are off to strong starts in their respective seasons as the men have jetted out to a 17-2 overall record, with a 5-1 total in the taxing BIG EAST conference. The women are 8-1 at home with a 13-5 overall record, 2-3 in conference play. In its first season, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team has compiled a 3-13-3 record. In the Orange's last three conference battles, Syracuse managed to go the distance with Robert Morris and Niagara, twice, forcing three-consecutive overtime draws. Each tie earned SU a point in the CHA. The Syracuse men's and women's track & field team showed their neighboring schools what the Orange is all about with 16 first-place showings at the annual SU Welcome Back meet held at Manley Field House. In the second indoor meet of the season, Syracuse hosted several schools to knock the dust off the cleats for some spirited competition. The Orange performed well in both track and the field events in what looks to be a very promising season for the SU tracksters. The Syracuse tennis squad is raring to get things rolling next weekend as the Orange travels to Colgate on Friday, Jan. 23 for its first match of the season. Syracuse will host Niagara on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 pm and Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2:30 pm at the Drumlins Tennis Center.
After a strong performance at the season-opening Cornell Relays back on Dec. 6, the Orange hosted the SU Welcome Back Meet on Friday, Jan. 16 at Manley Field House. The women's side claimed 10 first-place titles, including all six field events, and eight second-place showings while the men yielded five event crowns, one four-man relay title and three runner-up finishes. Junior Monica Ridgeway paced the Orange with two first-place victories in the shot put and 20-lb. weight throw while the rest of the SU women flashed their versatility with eight top marks all by different individuals. The men reflected the women's winning ways by churning out six different first-place winners of their own on Friday. Ridgeway's two triumphs came in the shot put and weight throw events. Sophomore Flings Owusu-Agyapong set a new school record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.00 for the win while newcomer Karelle Edwards dusted the field for a first-place clip of 8.40 in the 55-meter hurdles. Senior Lauren McClenney motored around Manley for a first-place performance in the 500-meter dash to the tune of 1:16.42 which was good enough for a BIG EAST-qualifying time. Junior Annabelle Pellerin, also an outside hitter on the SU volleyball team, finished with a first-place, BIG EAST-qualifying leap of 1.65m in the high jump event. Freshman Danielle Sherwood vanquished the rest of the pole vaulting field with a spring of 3.15m. Junior Uhunoma Osazuwa squeezed out a first-place victory in the long jump against two of her teammates with a jump of 5.33m. In the triple jump, senior Christina Connolly put forth a winning combination of 11.07m.
On the men's side, freshman Kris Kolewe finished the 800-meter run with a first-place time of 1:59.78. Junior Matt Martina repeated Kolewe's winning ways with a victory of his own in the mile run with a 4:30.46. In the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore transfer Jarret Eaton put on a nice second-place show in his SU debut with an NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark of 7.31. Freshman Matthew Callanan also made his first appearance for the Orange at Manley Field House with a third-place time of 7.81 in the same event. In the 1,600-meter relay, the Orange captured first place as freshman David Dubin, sophomore Da'Mon Merkerson (also a member of the SU football team), and seniors Terry Marshall and Skyy Simmons joined forces for a time of 3:24.32. Junior Eric Cleckner won the high jump with a leap of 1.86m while senior Bernard Bush took home the long jump crown with an IC4A-qualfying vault of 7.04m. Sophomore Kwaku Boah, also a member of the Orange football team, tossed 14.62m in the shot put for first place and a second place, BIG EAST-qualifying lob of 15.86m with the 35-lb. weight throw.

In a game that often ends in a tie, it took the Orange 18 tries before forcing its first overtime draw in program history. Syracuse and CHA-foe Robert Morris skated to an extra frame on Saturday, Jan. 10 with the final score settling at 2-2. Syracuse became accustomed to playing the extra five-minute session, because on its most recent road trip to Niagara this past weekend, Syracuse and the Purple Eagles fashioned two more draws with the same score, 1-1. With its three consecutive ties, the Orange picked up its first three points of the season in the conference standings. In the first game on Saturday, freshman forward Lisa Mullan put away her second career powerplay tally, third goal of her career, to supply SU with its lone goal of the contest. Mullan, the Orange's assist leader with 10 helpers on the year, was aided by sophomores Stefanie Marty and Rebecca Gordon in the extra-man situation. For Marty, the assist was her eighth career while Gordon chalked up her fourth on the season.
In Sunday's affair, Gordon delivered SU's only goal late in the second period. Gordon's second goal of the season, sixth point overall, secured her second two-game pointstreak of the season. Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) faced 40 shots in the two-game set at Niagara, stopping 38 total. The third-year netminder has now made 510 saves on this season, allowing 3.47 goals per game. Schoedel's save percentage rests at 89.2 (510-of-572) after 19 consecutive starts. Syracuse outshot the Purple Eagles 32-30 and has outshot its opponent in the last four games by a total of 108-92.
The Orange returns to the chilly confines of Tennity Ice Pavilion for its next four games. The Orange hosts rv/rv Wayne State for a two-game conference set on Friday, January 23 at 7 pm and Saturday, January 24 at 2pm. The following weekend, Niagara makes its way east down the Thruway for a two-game series with the Orange on Friday, January 30 at 7 pm and Saturday, January 31 at 2 pm.
