SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior distance runner Brad Miller was tabbed as the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Miller, a member of 2008 Division I Northeast Region USTFCCCA All-Region Team in cross country, ran against 131 other competitors in the men's mile race in Boston. Miller not only claimed first place in the field with an NCAA-Automatic qualifying time, he broke the Syracuse University indoor mile record with a mark of 4:00.19, surpassing Kyle Heath's record of 4:01.68 from last season.
Just 19 hundredths of a second barred Miller from breaking the elusive four-minute mile mark.
The Lancaster, Pa. native is the Orange's second-consecutive recipient of the conference decoration after sophomore transfer Jarret Eaton was bestowed with the honor for eliciting an NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark in the 55-meter hurdles with a second-place showing of 7.31at SU's Welcome Back Meet at Manley Field House.
Miller's feat joins the ranks of conference allies in Louisville's Tone Belt (BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week), Tarah McKay (BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week) and D'Ana McCarty (BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week).
Syracuse's new indoor mile record holder and classmate Dan Busby were the two Orange representatives at the 2008 Division I Cross Country Championship in the fall. Miller garnered a 127th place finish on the 10K trial.
The Syracuse track & field team will travel to the Keystone State to compete in the two-day Penn State National Open on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31. Over 40 teams and 1,000 athletes plan on participating in Happy Valley this weekend.
