The success the Syracuse field hockey team and women's cross country teams experienced during the 2008 season propelled the Orange athletics program into the top 50 of the NACDA Director's Cup standings. Syracuse ranks 49th with 101 points, the most since 2001-02 when the Orange was 33rd (114 points) after the fall season.
“The success our student-athletes enjoyed in the Fall shows that our vision is coming to fruition,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “We have made it a priority to field championship teams. The field hockey and cross country teams are leading the way. We are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to many more successes.”
The field hockey team earned the first No. 1 ranking for an SU women's program and the first NCAA Championship semifinal appearance in school history. In addition, the Orange won the BIG EAST Championship after defeating Connecticut in the tournament title game. Syracuse finished the 2008 season with a 22-2, 5-1 BIG EAST record and ranked No. 3 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
The cross country squad finished the season ranked 25th nationally, marking the first time in school history that the women's program has been nationally ranked. Syracuse finished 28th in its first appearance at the NCAA Championship.
