CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Orange softball team played its fifth and final game of the College of Charleston Cougar Classic Sunday morning suffering a 1-0 setback to East Tennessee State (3-2). Syracuse (5-3) finished the tournament 3-2 after securing wins against host Charleston, Akron and Howard.

The Orange registered five hits against the Buccaneers with senior Jamie Kelling leading the team going 2-for-3. Senior catcher Amy Kelley was 1-for-2 with a double, while both senior #Jorden Rosen# and sophomore Hallie Gibbs finished the game 1-for-3.

Syracuse's first opportunity to score came in the bottom of the first. Kelling singled and advanced to second after freshman Gaby Torzilli hit a grounder to second base. Gibbs singled to left field and Kelling rounded third and headed home but was out to end the inning.

Kelley hit SU's only double of the game in the second, but ETSU's pitcher Marissa Hardy prevented the Orange from capitalizing. Hardy struck out both freshman Kelly Saco and Rosen and senior Lindsay Wasek fouled out to end SU's chances.

The Buccaneers scored their only run in the top of the third. Cheniece Cason singled up the middle to open the inning. She then scored after back-to-back singles from teammates Katy Jett and Kate Powell.

Rosen and Kelling added two more hits to the Orange total in the fifth after both singled. However, Hardy's pitching didn't allow any more chances for the remainder of the game.

Junior Brittany Gardner pitched a complete game for the Orange throwing three strikeouts and allowing only six hits. Saco led the team with 10 putouts and Kelling collected four assists.

Syracuse is back in action on Friday, February 20 for an indoor matchup at Colgate. The two clubs will meet at 5 p.m. The Orange heads back on the road the weekend of February 27 for the University of Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
