Gardner and Watts Earn League Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse softball junior Brittany Gardner and freshman second baseman Stephanie Watts both earned conference honors the BIG EAST announced Monday. Gardner was named the Pitcher of the Week, her second honor of the season, and Watts was named to the honor roll.
Gardner appeared in three games for Syracuse (9-4) over the weekend at the UCF Invitational. In addition to pitching the final two innings against Maine to secure a 3-1 win, Gardner pitched complete games for wins against UCF (3-2) and Eastern Michigan (6-3). In 16 innings, she had a 1.75 ERA, allowed only 13 hits, five runs and four earned runs and struck out 13 in 64 at-bats. Gardner also only allowed three multi-hit innings.
The Sterling, Va. native is second on the team so far this season with a 1.29 ERA after having appeared in eight games. She has pitched a team-leading 38 innings, has two saves and one shutout. Her 29 strikeouts also rank second on the team.

Watts appeared in all five games at the UCF Invitational. She finished with a .471 average after going 8-for-17 with seven runs and three RBI. She hit her fourth career home run in SU's second game against the UCF Golden Knights.
For the season, Watts owns a .452 average with two doubles and a team-high four triples. She is 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts and leads all Orange players with 26 assists and a .976 slugging percentage.

Gardner, Watts and the rest of the Orange softball team is back in action this weekend in California. Prior to compete in the Long Beach State Tournament March 7-8, SU will take one Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m. (PST).
