
Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Greg Niewieroski (Watertown, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 23, 2009.
Niewieroski has played in all six games making one start for the Orange men's lacrosse team. He has scored four goals and registered three groundballs while serving as an attackman.
In SU's 22-3 season opening victory against Providence, Niewieroski was one of three players to tally hat tricks with three goals, one of which was his 50th career goal.
Last season, Niewieroski finished fifth on the team with 28 points after scoring 23 goals and posting five assists. He helped secure Syracuse's NCAA Tournament wins on its way to the 2008 NCAA Championship with four goals and two assists.
The physical education major in the College of Education and the rest of the men's lacrosse team is back in action Tuesday, March 24 at home versus Hobart. Action begins at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Freshman Kelly Saco (Miami, Fla.) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 23, 2009.
Saco has started in 14 games for head softball coach Leigh Ross this season. She currently owns a .359 batting average with two home runs and 10 RBI.
The Orange softball team is 11-9 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST Conference play after playing a doubleheader at Seton Hall this past weekend. Despite suffering a 5-1 setback to the Pirates in game one, Syracuse secured a 9-0 victory in game two. First baseman Saco helped the Orange out early in game two with a three-run home run in the first inning putting the Orange up 3-0.

The Orange plays its home opener on Friday, March 27 when it hosts Pittsburgh. Action begins at 2 p.m at the SU Softball Stadium at Skytop.
