STORRS, Conn. – Syracuse scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to erase a four run deficit for an 11-7 victory in game one of a doubleheader at Connecticut (15-11, 3-5) Tuesday afternoon. However, the Huskies rallied in game two scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-2 win of their own.
“I was proud of the comeback we made in the seventh inning of game one,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “Nicole Miller and Lindsay Wasek were key in getting that started. Kelly Saco's grand slam turned the entire game around. Although we outhit them in the second game, we didn't get the big hit when it was needed. We left 11 runners stranded on base. You won't beat a good hitting team like UConn if you don't take care of scoring runners when you have the opportunity.”
Senior Lindsay Wasek led the Orange finishing the day 4-for-7 with four RBI, all of which came in game one. Catcher Amy Kelley made her mark in game two leading the Orange with three hits in four plate appearances. Senior Nicole Miller also had a strong performance for Syracuse (15-11, 4-2), including going 2-for-3 with two runs in game one and 1-for-2 in game two.
Three freshmen also made their mark today with Kelly Saco leading the way with her first collegiate grand slam in the first game. Stephanie Watts closed out the day a combined 2-for-5 with two runs, while classmate Gaby Torzilli was 2-for-4 in game one.
After the first five innings of game one, the Orange led 2-1 courtesy of a fourth inning home run by sophomore Hallie Gibbs and a triple from Wasek in the fifth that scored Torzilli. Connecticut took over the game in the bottom of the sixth as its offense spirited to life with the Huskies plating five runners to take a 6-2 lead.
Syracuse, which has three come-from-behind wins this season, managed to add a fourth after scoring nine runs in the top of the seventh to regain control of the game. Miller and Wasek opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, with Wasek's scoring Miller to cut UConn's lead to only three.

After Gibbs was walked to load the bases, Saco powered a homer to left field to give Syracuse an 8-6 lead. The Orange posted four more hits as senior Jorden Rosen, Miller and Torzilli scored SU's last three runs. Connecticut added a final run in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to produce the necessary offense to take home the win.
The Orange scored its only two runs of game two in the top of the first for the early advantage. Watts, who reached on an error by the Husky shortstop, stole second and advanced to third on a Kelling single. She headed home on a right field single from Gibbs. Kelling put the Orange up 2-0 scoring on a single from Kelley.
