PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse softball freshman Jenna Caira was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week the conference announced Monday. Caira helped the Orange to splits against conference foes St. John's and Georgetown this past week.
Caira's honor is the sixth by a member of the Syracuse softball team this season and the Orange's third pitcher of the week honor. Junior Brittany Gardner was named pitcher of the week on two occasions, while freshman Stephanie Watts and senior Nicole Miller have both been named to the honor roll.
The Richmond Hill, Ontario native pitched two complete games for head coach Leigh Ross last week. She has a team-best 9-5 record on the season after going 1-1 in her two games.
In SU's 7-1 game two victory at St. John's on Wednesday, April 8, Caira allowed only one run and one multi-hit inning. She followed that performance up pitching a 12-inning thriller in game one versus Georgetown on April 11. In the second-longest game in Orange program history, Caira threw a career-high 16 strikeouts for her first career double-digit strikeout game.
Caira is second on the team with a 2.45 era this season. She's pitched a team-high 105.2 innings and thrown 112 strikeouts.
Caira and the rest of the Syracuse softball team is back in action this afternoon. The Orange hosts Canisius in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at the SU Softball Stadium at Skytop.
