SYRACUSE, N.Y. – History was made at the SU Softball Stadium this afternoon as the Orange swept Canisius (17-16) to earn head coach Leigh Ross' 300th career win. After winning game one 9-2, freshman pitcher Jenna Caira threw seven strikeouts in five innings for the program's fourth no-hitter securing the milestone for coach Ross with an 8-0 triumph.
Caira became the first Orange pitcher to throw two no-hitters in the same season. On April 5, Caira threw nine strikeouts and held Villanova hitless to help Syracuse (21-13) to a 5-0 win. Tara DiMaggio threw SU's first no-hitter in the program's inaugural season for an 11-0 five inning victory against Buffalo. The second occurred in 2005 when Courtney Mosch threw a complete-game no-hitter against Cornell.
Sophomore Angie Sagnelli was the go-to pitcher in game one. She improved to 5-1 on the season after allowing only two runs and walking none.
Senior Jamie Kelling finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs and three steals, while sophomore Hallie Gibbs went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Senior Amy Kelley ended 3-for-5 with four RBI and one home run. Sophomore Rachel Helman was the star of game two. She was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for her best performance of the season thus far.
Game One
The Golden Griffins started out strong with back-to-back singles to put two on base. After another single from Michelle Fridey loaded the bases, Sagnelli hit Paige Frieberger with a pitch to plate Lauren Hope. However, Sagnelli went on to throw two strikeouts to end Canisius' early chances.
Syracuse added one run each in the first, second and third innings. Freshman Stephanie Watts scored SU's first run to tie the game 1-1 on a sac fly by Kelley. Watts' classmate Kelly Saco scored the game-winner in the bottom of the second on a sac fly from senior Lindsay Wasek. Syracuse made it a 3-1 game in the third when Kelling scored on a wild pitch by Juliette Bowers.
The Orange put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with five hits and five runs. Watts was the first on base for SU after she was walked; she advanced to second on a right field single from Kelling. The pair then pulled a double steal putting Watts in scoring position. After Bowers walked Gibbs to load the bases, a single from Kelley scored Watts and Kelling headed home on an error by leftfielder Amanda Cannizzo putting the Orange up, 5-1.
Senior Jorden Rosen registered SU's next hit with a base-hit to left field. Freshman Lacey Kohl followed it up with a single to right field scoring Kelley and Gibbs to make it a 7-1 game. Rosen scored the final run of the inning on a single from Wasek.
The Golden Griffins added one more run in the sixth on a home run by Katie Lancellotti, but were unable to challenge the Orange any further. SU added its final run in the bottom half of the inning to produce the final score.
Game Two
After three quick scoreless innings to open the second game, SU took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Helman sparked the Orange offense with a right field single, advanced to second on a base-hit from Watts and moved to third courtesy of an error by Canisius third baseman Cameron Norton. A second error by Norton allowed Kelling to reach first and plated Helman to give SU a 1-0 edge.
After Kelling registered her third steal of the day, Gibbs hit a two-RBI single to left field to send Watts and Kelling home for a 3-0 lead. Kelley then made it a 5-0 game with her fifth homer of the season. The final run by the Orange came on a single down the leftfield line by Helman.
Syracuse ended the game with two final runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, Helman powered her third hit of the day to right field and advanced to second when Watts was walked. A single from Kelling plated both Watts and Helman to secure the sweep.
