Understanding the Hype - A Student-Athlete's Perspective of the 'Cuse Awards
A fun and entertaining way to honor Syracuse University athletics and its student-athletes, the 2009 'Cuse Awards will be held on Sunday, April 19 at the Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse. The 'Cuse Awards recognize extraordinary athletic, academic and community service accomplishments of Syracuse's student-athletes in a fun, energized environment.
“We found in the two years that 'Cuse Awards have been in existence that the event has been extremely successful in creating a sense of spirit and community among our student- athletes, coaches, and staff,” said 'Cuse Awards director Roger Springfield. “It's a real uplifting event that showcases the many accomplishments of our student- athletes and coaches, many of which the rest of our community is not aware of. It's the one time each year we get to recognize excellence in athletics, academics, and social responsibility in front of the entire Syracuse athletics community and beyond.”
In 2007, the 'Cuse Awards debuted in the Carrier Dome. The next year the program was held in the historic Landmark Theatre, the same location for the world premiere of the motion picture “The Express.” The Landmark Theater creates the perfect sense of spirit for its audience.
This Sunday evening Syracuse University student-athletes, family and friends will learn who will take home the Soladay Award, which is most prestigious award honoring a male and female student- athlete for their achievements in competition, the classroom, and the community. Other 'Cuse Awards include male and female athletes of the year, team of the year, coach of the year, and performance of the year. Humor is also part of the program. In 2008, the best dramatic performance went to volleyball coach Jing Pu, who beat out men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim, women's basketball coach Quentin Hillsman, and men's lacrosse coach John Desko.
The 2009 'Cuse Awards show will be available as free content on Orange All Access (SUAthletics.com) following the event.
