TAMPA, Fla. – The seventh-seeded Orange suffered a 4-0 setback to second-seeded DePaul in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday morning. Syracuse had its eight-matching winning streak snapped and is relegated to the consolation bracket of the conference tournament.
Heading into Friday's match, DePaul was ranked No. 45 in the country by the ITA, marking Syracuse's second trial against a nationally ranked opponent this season (No. 52 Florida International - Mar. 12).
Freshman Emily Harman and sophomore Christina Tan had its three-match winning streak snapped at the top doubles spot after enduring an 8-1 loss to Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic.
DePaul clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 post when sophomore Simone Kalhorn and freshman Alessondra Parra had its team-best four-match winning streak put to rest. Katarina Milinkovic and Gia McKnight handed the Orange pair an 8-2 loss to lock up the first point of the match.
Juniors Ashley Spicer and Chelsea Jones were tied up in a 5-5 stalemate with Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell before play was adjourned at the No. 2 match.
In singles play, the Blue Demons tallied the match-winning fourth point after winning three solo contests.
Harman was outdone by Antunovic at the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-1 while Tan lost to Redecsi, 6-3, 6-0, in the second singles bout. The deciding match came at the No. 6 spot when Jones suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Milinkovic.
Kalhorn, Parra and Spicer all had their singles matches cut short once DePaul attained its fourth point.
The Blue Demons' victory advanced them onto the semifinal bracket against the winner of the third-seeded host USF Bulls and sixth-seeded Louisville.
Syracuse will continue its playoff push against No. 4 Marquette at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the P.E. Courts.
