On the weekend in which Syracuse student-athletes were celebrated for their extraordinary athletic, academic and community service achievements at the third annual 'Cuse Awards, the Orange boasted another stretch of athletic excellence.
The women's lacrosse squad claimed a share of the BIG EAST title with a 15-6 romp at Rutgers on Saturday. Syracuse shared the 2007 regular-season title before winning its first outright championship last season and its six league victories are a program single-season best. The men's lacrosse team survived a late scare against Albany on Friday night with a 15-13 victory. With a 10-2 lead at the half, the Orange was outscored 8-1 in the third quarter, but SU tallied four goals in the final quarter to secure the two-goal victory.
The softball team won 7-of-8 contests last week highlighted by a 10-5 triumph against No. 17/18 Louisville on Sunday afternoon. With those victories, Syracuse improved to 26-14, overall, on the year. The sprinters and distance runners combined for seven NCAA Regional-qualifying marks at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational while both men's crew team and women's rowing squad hosted respective races at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park. Syracuse alumnus, Anna Goodale '05, was honored for her gold medal accomplishment at the 2008 Olympics.
The women's tennis team had one of its most successful season's in program history ended when fourth-seeded Marquette beat the seventh-seeded Orange, 4-2, in the consolation bracket of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday morning. Syracuse finished in a tie for seventh place with ninth-seeded Pittsburgh.
Track & Field
Senior Kyle Heath highlighted the Orange effort at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invite with an NCAA-Regional qualifying victory in the steeplechase while freshmen Natalie Busby and Heather Stephens along with sophomore Rebekah MacKay hit the NCAA mark in the same race. Heath's time of 8:51.39 beat out 38 other competitors for first place. Busby's mark of 10:33.45 notched her a second-place finish while MacKay crossed the line in 10:36.04 for third. Stephens put forth another top 10 time of 10:39.77 for seventh place.
In day two at Princeton, three hurdlers cleared the NCAA bar. Junior Uhunoma Osazuwa earned first place in the 100-mete hurdles with an NCAA Regional time of 13.85, topping 22 other challengers. Sophomore Jarret Eaton and senior Terry Marshall followed in their teammate's ways by making the NCAA Regional grade in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Eaton claimed second place in 13.99 while Marshall was tabbed one position behind for third in 14.29. Marshall's mark passed the NCAA Regional standard by a mere one one-hundredth of a second.
Despite it being the first men's outdoor relay race of the season, the quartet of seniors Michael LeBlanc and Antoine Clark, sophomore Sham Lewis and Eaton did not let any cobwebs get in the way as the Orange four posted a first-place, IC4A-eligible time of 40.99 in the 4x100-meter relay. Sophomore Flings Owusu-Agyapong won her second 100-meter dash of the year with an ECAC-time of 11.83 while classmate Lareea Chisholm second-place performance of 12.08 also yielded ECAC merit.

Women's Tennis
The Syracuse women's tennis team had one of its most successful season's in program history ended when fourth-seeded Marquette beat the seventh-seeded Orange, 4-2, in the consolation bracket of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday morning. Syracuse finished in a tie for seventh place with ninth-seeded Pittsburgh following its 4-0 loss to third-seeded USF.
Syracuse's 16-7 mark (.696) represented the best winning percentage since the 1999-2000 team's record of 16-6 (.727). Head coach Luke Jensen is now 38-30 (.559) through three seasons at Syracuse. SU closed out its 2009 BIG EAST campaign with a 10-4 record.
Syracuse started up the BIG EAST Tournament by recording its eighth-consecutive conference win against 10th-seeded West Virginia on Thursday morning, 4-0. The Orange tore through singles play by claiming all six matches in addition to winning two of three doubles tilt for the point. SU was relegated to the consolation bracket after a 4-0 setback against second-seeded DePaul on Friday.
Sophomore Simone Kalhorn totaled the best singles mark this year (16-6) while the No. 1 doubles team of Emily Harman and Christina Tan finished with a club best 17-6 record.

Softball
With four doubleheaders in the books from last week, Syracuse outscored its opponents by a combined total of 56-19. The Orange swept Canisius, Cornell and Providence and upended No. 17/18 Louisville in the frontend of Sunday's twinbill.
On Monday at the SU softball stadium, Syracuse's two victories against Canisius marked head coach Leigh Ross' 300th career win. As an added bonus, freshman pitcher Jenna Caira fanned seven batters in five innings for the program's fourth no-hitter to secure the milestone. Caira became the first Orange pitcher to throw two no-hitters in the same season.
On Wednesday, Syracuse did not surrender a run in its 3-0 and 8-0 victories against Cornell. Caira tossed her team-leading fifth shutout while freshman Stephanie Watts finished the day 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a home run. Senior Nicole Miller went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer, as well. In the two wins at Providence, seniors Jamie Kelling went 4-for-8 with two steals and a double while Amy Kelley went 3-for-5, scoring two runs and knocking in four.
Syracuse recorded its first victory against a ranked opponent since 2006 while the Orange upset the Cardinals, 10-5, in the first of two games. Despite a strong showing, the Orange suffered an 8-2 setback to UofL in game two. Sophomore Rachel Helman went 3-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored, while Kelling went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game one. Caira allowed zero earned runs and recorded seven strikeouts in the in the circle while Miller turned in a 3-for-6 performance with two doubles, three RBI and two runs.

2009 Softball Schedule
Women's Rowing
The women's rowing team hosted Harvard and Dartmouth for the O'Leary Cup on Saturday at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park. Anna Goodale, gold medal winner at the 2008 Olympics, was also honored this weekend.
The women finished third in the varsity eight, crossing the finish line in 7:09.5.The second varsity eight had the same result with a time of 7:16.9.
The Orange women earned their first victory of the day, finishing the varsity four in 7:55.2. Syracuse placed second in the novice four with a time of 9:07.5. SU also took home the freshmen eight, crossing the line in 7:26.9.
Syracuse finished the day with a second-place finish in the second varsity four with a time of 8:29.7.

2009 Rowing Schedule
Men's Crew
The men's crew hosted Navy and Cornell for the Goes Trophy on Saturday at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park.
The men placed second in the varsity eight with a time of 6:07.0. The loss snapped Syracuse's three-year undefeated cup race streak and marked SU's first loss in a cup race since it lost the Packard Cup to Dartmouth on May 8, 2005.
Syracuse earned its first victory of the day, finishing the junior varsity eight race in 6:11.0. The Orange placed second in the third varsity eight with a time of 6:31.8.
SU finished second in the freshmen eight in 6:20.6 and ended the day with a third-place finish in the second freshmen eight with a time of 6:52.5.
