
SU Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior Amy Kelley (Bend, Ore.) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 4, 2009.
Kelley is one of three members of the softball team to have played in all 50 games this season. She is third on the team with a .338 batting average, is tied for first on the team with seven home runs and is second on the team with 300 putouts.
The catcher has helped Syracuse to one of its most successful seasons in her final year with the Orange. With a game one victory against Rutgers on Sunday afternoon, the Orange earned its first 30-win season since 2006 and its first under third-year head coach Leigh Ross. SU finished the season with a 30-20 overall record, going 12-10 in BIG EAST play.
Kelley, a marketing management major in the Whitman School of Management, will join the rest of the team in Louisville, Ky. this week for the 2009 BIG EAST Softball Tournament. The Orange has earned the No. 4 seed and will face USF on May 7 at 10 a.m.
Sophomore Jeff Gilbert (Liverpool, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 4, 2009.
Gilbert has played in 13 games this season for head men's lacrosse coach John Desko. He has tallied three goals and one assist.
Most recently, the midfielder was one of 11 players to score a goal in SU's 13-7 victory against Colgate. His goal came near the end of the first quarter giving SU a 4-0 lead. In the regular-season finale with the Raiders, Gilbert also registered his first career assist on a fourth quarter goal by teammate Scott Kahoe.
Gilbert, who is enrolled in the Whitman School of Management, and the rest of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team are back in action on Sunday, May 10. The team earned the No. 2 seed to the 2009 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament and will host Siena at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
