SACRMENTO, Calif. – The Syracuse University men's rowing team concludes its 2009 season at the 107th IRA Regatta, June 4-6, on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. The event, which serves as the national championship in collegiate men's rowing, features two-dozen crews from across the country.
For alumni and fans planning to travel to the IRA there will be an alumni/parent tent set up near the finish line. Susan Filkins and Steve Harrison (former crew parent) will be there representing the University and leading the cheering section. Carol Kruse (mother of current SU rower Pete) has been organizing food for the tent. Any alums interesting in bringing any food items are encouraged to do so. You can contact Carol at cdkruse1@comcast.net. Food for the tent is usually done by everyone bringing something to throw in the mix.
SU's varsity eight, fresh after finishing its dual race season with a 4-1 mark, is ranked 11th going into the championship. The Orange is one of 21 crews competing for the Varsity Challenge Cup. There are four heats Thursday from 8-8:45 a.m. PT. The four repecharge heats are scheduled from 2-2:45 p.m. PT on Thursday. The four semifinal heats will take place on Friday from 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PT with the finals scheduled from 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. PT on Saturday.
Syracuse's second varsity eight is one of 13 entries gunning for the Kennedy Challenge cup. Racing begins on Thursday from 9-9:24 a.m. PT with the repecharge taking place on Friday from 10:12 – 10:36 a.m. PT. The second varsity eight grand final is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. PT on Saturday with the petite and third-level finals coming at 11 a.m. PT and 9 a.m. PT, respectively.
The Orange is also one of the 16 crews in the open four race. There are two heats on Thursday from 10:12-10:24 a.m. PT. with the repecharge scheduled for Friday from 8:24-8:36 a.m. PT. The finals will take place on Saturday from 9:12-9:24 a.m. PT.
SU's freshman eight is one of 17 crews competing for the Stewards Cup. There are three heats on Thursday from 9:36-10 a.m. a.m. PT. The three repecharge heats are scheduled during the same time on Friday. The finals will take place on 10:30-10:45 a.m. PT on Saturday.
The Orange will also have an entry in the Masters Alumni Eight. Syracuse is one of four crews competing for the Francis Shields Bowl on Saturday at 8 a.m. PT.
At the 2008 IRA, the varsity eight won the third-level final and finished 11th overall. The second varsity eight was 17th overall and the freshman four placed 14th. The Orange finished 14th in the IRA Regatta Ten Eyck points trophy with 63.
Syracuse has won 27 IRA championships. Six of those titles have been won by varsity eight boats, the last in 1978. The Orange freshmen eight won three consecutive titles from 1976-78. From 1952-1992, the regatta was held on the home water of the Orange, Onondaga Lake. The race had to be moved in 1993 due to flooding, but returned in 1994. It has been held in Camden since 1995. The regatta has also been held on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, Saratoga Lake, the Ohio River and Cayuga Lake.
