HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman Jenna Rickan scored in the 61st minute to give Syracuse a 1-0 victory at Colgate on Friday, Sept. 11. The win gives the Orange its first three-game winning streak since the 2004 campaign and improves its overall record to 3-2-1. Colgate goes to 1-3-1.
“The team is more organized and the effort that all the players have put forth has been fantastic,” said Orange head coach Phil Wheddon.
Senior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made three saves and posted her third straight shutout for SU. She is the school's career leader in that category with 19.
The Orange dominated the first half, outshooting Colgate 12-2, but couldn't get a shot past Raiders goalkeeper Ashley Walsh. Syracuse had another scoring chance five minutes into the second half, but a Colgate defender blocked a shot on the goal line to preserve the 0-0 tie.
The Orange finally broke through at the 61:47 mark when Rickan re-directed a shot by freshman Rosina Callisto for the only score of the game. The goal was Rickan's first of her career, while Callisto was credited with her first career assist.
Colgate had a chance to tie the game late in the second half, but Romagnuolo blocked the shot to maintain the lead.
The Orange finished with 27 shots to 11 for Colgate, and had nine corners to three for the Raiders. Walsh finished with seven saves.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday when it plays at Niagara at 1 p.m.
