SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The two-time defending NCAA champion Orange lacrosse team will participate in Navy's fall tournament on Saturday, Oct. 10. The trip to Annapolis, Md. wraps up a four-week fall practice season for the Orange that begins on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The six-team tournament will feature three games played simultaneously at 12:00 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. In addition to Syracuse and Navy, Georgetown, Harvard, Hobart and Penn State will participate in the event. Games will be played at Rip Miller Field, as well as the grass and turf playing surfaces at Farragut Field.
The Orange will face the host Midshipmen at Rip Miller Field in its opening game and conclude the competition against Harvard on the turf at Farragut Field at 2:30 p.m.
Orange fans traveling to the tournament are reminded that only cars with Department of Defense (DOD) stickers are allowed to drive onto the Naval Academy grounds. Fans are encouraged to either park at the Navy-Marine Crops Memorial stadium ($5 charge to park) and take the free shuttle service over to the Naval Academy. Fans can also park outside of the Academy gates and walk onto the grounds. All visitors are required to have a picture I.D. to gain access to the grounds.
In 2009, Syracuse finished with a 16-2 record for the second consecutive year and became the first team in more than a decade to repeat as NCAA champions. The Orange reeled off nine straight wins to end the season, including a 10-9 overtime victory against Cornell to secure its 11th national championship.
The Orange returns several offensive weapons this season, including high-scoring attackman Stephen Keogh, who is the squad's returning leader in points (55) and goals (49).
Defensively, Syracuse will benefit from the return of John Lade and #Matt Tierney who both started every game on close defense in 2009. The Orange also brings back its top longstick midfielder in Joel White and starting goalie John Galloway# who became the first goaltender in NCAA history to win national championships as both a freshman and sophomore.
