SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse lacrosse All-American Steve Scaramuzzino has joined the Orange coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, head coach John Desko announced on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Scaramuzzino will work primarily with the team's offense and joins a group of coaches who are all Syracuse alums and played for Hall of Famer Roy Simmons Jr. during their collegiate careers.
“We're very happy to have Steve with us,” Desko said. “He obviously has Orange blood and very good experience. He's knowledgeable, mature and he's somebody that's been successful as a coach and businessperson. He's a great example for our players.”
Scaramuzzino played for the Orange from 1986-89 and was a three-year starter at long pole. He was a member of two national championship teams (1988 and 1989) and was co-captain of the Orange as a senior in 1989. Scaramuzzino earned second-team All-America honors following his senior year and was invited to play in the North/South Senior All-Star Game.
Scaramuzzino got his coaching start at Navy in 1990 and he served as an assistant there from 1990-93, helping the Midshipmen to two NCAA playoff appearances (1992 and 1993). In addition to his college coaching experience, Scaramuzzino has coached professionally in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the National Lacrosse League (NLL), including the 2007 season when he was an assistant for the MLL's Chicago Machine under current Syracuse defensive coordinator Lelan Rogers.
Scaramuzzino has also been a coach for various youth programs and was a founding member of the Simmons Boys and Girls Lacrosse League. In 2009, he served as an assistant coach to former SU standout Jamie Archer at Jamesville-DeWitt High School and helped the Red Rams to an appearance in the state semifinals.
Scaramuzzino also has pro playing experience. He spent four seasons in the NLL, including three with the Syracuse Smash (1998-2000). His most productive season was in 1999 when he had seven assists and 76 loose balls.
A graduate of West Genesee High School, Scaramuzzino played for legendary high school coach Mike Messere and was a member of the Wildcats' 1985 state championship team.
Scaramuzzino is currently the owner of a commercial real estate and brokerage firm in Syracuse. He and his wife, Jessica, have a daughter, Alexis.
