
Campbell Bids Farewell to the Dome, SU

Senior associate athletics director Pat Campbell announced his retirement from the University, effective immediately, in January. Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross has elevated senior associate athletics director Pete Sala to become the Dome's managing director. A 32-year University employee, Campbell joined the Carrier Dome staff in 1979 as the business manager and advanced through the management ranks to his current position as the person responsible for management of the Carrier Dome in 2005. From 1991 through 2005 he was the managing director of the Dome.
Campbell directed all operations of the Carrier Dome, including all event and non-event activity. He scheduled all events, negotiated contracts with third-party organizations and promoters, and prepared the Dome's budget and oversaw all accounting functions.
Campbell was originally hired as an internal auditor at the University in 1978 and joined the athletics department as assistant AD/business manager in 1979. He became the Carrier Dome business manager in 1981, before becoming assistant managing director in 1986. He assumed his present duties in 2005.
A certified public accountant since 1979, Campbell worked at Coopers & Lybrand, CPAs from 1975-77. He is a 1975 graduate of LeMoyne College. Campbell, a native of Syracuse, and his wife, Judith, have two sons, Matthew and Scott. They reside in Marcellus.
Sala, who started at the Carrier Dome in 1982 as a production assistant and advanced through the ranks to production manager in 1988, operations manager in 1991 assistant director of facilities operations from 1991 through June 2005, when he was promoted to senior associate athletics director for facilities.
Sala will be responsible for management of the Carrier Dome, in addition to his responsibilities for all athletics department facilities and operations, including the Lampe Athletics Complex, the Carrier Dome, Hookway Practice Fields, the Softball Stadium and Drumlins Tennis Club.
At the Dome, Sala directs stadium control and acts as a liaison between the athletics department and the Dome. He supervises a full-time staff of four and nearly 100 students that assist in Dome maintenance and facility change-overs. In conjunction with athletic events, concerts and special-event dinners, Sala directs pre-event preparations of the facility and post-event cleanup. Sala serves as the Dome's contact person for concert productions.
A 1979 graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, Sala attended Morrisville College for one year and the University of Massachusetts for one year as a turf management major. He and his wife, Laurie, reside in Jamesville with their son, Jake.
