“We have one quarter to be great. We have one quarter. That's all we need.” – Antwon Bailey
It starts with a vision. A vision of where you've been, where you are, where you want to be, and how you want to get there.
It requires leadership. Leaders who will model the way, who will build and sustain a culture of excellence. Leaders who will not accept mediocrity, who expect the best out of themselves and those that follow them.
It starts with faith. Do you believe in the vision? Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe in your teammates? Do you believe in your leaders?
It's bigger than the individual. No single player, no single game, no single year, no single team, no single coach, no single fan will make the difference. It takes a collective focus and a collaboration of a myriad of details and interactions.
What is it? Greatness.
The win on Saturday was not great. Nor was it the end of the long process of building a great football program. It's merely a stepping stone— one accomplishment in a long list of accomplishments that will one day be remembered as the prelude to Syracuse University Football's return to respectability and a tradition of greatness.
The game was filled with mistakes and lucky breaks. It was also a day that Syracuse got stronger as the game wore on, while their opponent weakened. It was a day that ended in smiles and laughter and cheering and clapping. It was a good day, a good game, and one small step towards our destination.
We've had enjoyable wins during this dark decade of losses. None have led directly to a rejuvenation of the program. But those who have been paying attention can certainly notice a trend, a certain trajectory that may return the program to the heights it once achieved.
I have no idea how the players or coaches feel. I do know how the fans feel. There's a feeling of hopefulness that most fans dare not let solidify into true confidence. They've been disappointed too many times before to let it happen again. But they sense something. Something worth cheering about. And there's years of pent up frustration and pessimism just waiting to explode in unbridled joy. And Saturday was just the beginning. If you don't believe me, just listen to this…
