Bearcats Hand Orange 4-0 Defeat

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Bearcats scored twice in each half and went on to defeat Syracuse by the score of 4-0 on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Gettler Stadium. The loss erased the Orange's chance at gaining a BIG EAST Championship berth for the first time since 2005.
The Orange entered Saturday night's game in a three-way tie with Rutgers and DePaul for the Red Division's sixth and final playoff spot. Syracuse needed a win over the Bearcats to have an opportunity to reach the postseason.
Syracuse finishes the 2010 campaign at 2-10-5 overall and 0-6-3 in conference play in Ian McIntyre's first season as head coach. Cincinnati improved to 7-4-6 overall and 5-1-3 in the league with the victory. The Bearcats earned the Red Division's second seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship with the win.
Cincinnati jumped on top of the game early, scoring in the third minute when Mark Konitsch headed a Matt Bahner cross past SU redshirt senior goalie Jeremy Vuolo.The Bearcats extended their lead to two in the 30th minute on Michael Millay's first goal of the season.
Cincinnati added to its scoring total in the second half. The Bearcats received goals from Bahner and Tristan Watson in the 49th and 74th minutes, respectively, to produce the final score.
Konitsch had a hand in three of the Cincinnati's four goals, finishing with a goal and two assists on the night. Bahner collected three points (1g, 1a). Cincinnati goalie Matt Williams made one save to earn his ninth shutout of the season.
Cincinnati held the advantage in shots for the match, 16-11. Syracuse registered eight corner kicks in the game to five for the Bearcats, including a 3-0 advantage in the second half.
Junior Federico Agreda paced the SU offense with three shots. Sophomore Mark Brode recorded the Orange's only shot on goal of the game, testing Williams with a header in the 28th minute. Vuolo made four saves in his final collegiate game.
Match Notes: The Orange and Bearcats have split the six meetings between them with the home team prevailing each time … Vuolo finished the year with 79 saves, the highest single-season total of his career.
