PRINCETON, N.J. – Former Syracuse University men's rower Justin Stangel '07 was named to the 2010 U.S. National Team that will represent the United States at the 2010 World Rowing Championships scheduled for October 31-November 7 in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
Stangel will be racing in the Men's Pair with Coxswain (M2+) with Stephen Young and Nareg Guregian. That crew recently placed first at the USRowing Senior World Championship Trials in Mercer Lake, N.J. Stangel and his teammates clawed relentlessly back into the running, and then unleashed a deadly sprint to win the final in 3:33.297, 5.183 seconds faster than the second-place crew.
“We knew from the race before that we had the sprint if we needed it,” Young told USRowing. “We started out a little farther down today than we had hoped, but I told them with 500 meters to go, I said 'you've got 500 meters to go and a length to go. If you want it, it's yours.' They definitely wanted it. It was a great finish.”
Stangel helped lead the Orange to two consecutive undefeated cup seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
