PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior longstick middie Joel White was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, March 22 and senior midfielder Max Bartig was named to the conference's weekly honor roll.
The duo was rewarded for their performances in Syracuse's 10-7 victory against archrival Johns Hopkins on Saturday at Homewood Field.
White's selection marks the third time in the last four weeks a Syracuse performer has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Senior Matt Tierney earned the honor on March 1 and March 15.
White matched up against Johns Hopkins' Michael Kimmel, one of the top offensive midfielders in the country, and held him without a point in the win. The performance ended Kimmel's 28-game point streak, which had been the fourth-longest such streak in the nation. In addition, White led Syracuse with a game-best six ground balls and caused a turnover. He also contributed a key transition goal with 2:38 remaining in regulation.
Playing with SU's top midfield line for the first time, Bartig scored a personal-best three goals against the Blue Jays. Bartig scored SU's first goal 2:55 into the contest and tallied consecutive third-quarter goals as part of an overall 5-0 run that gave Syracuse control of the game.
Syracuse returns to action on Tuesday, March 22 when it visits McCooey Field in Geneva, N.Y. to face Hobart. Start time is 7 p.m. on Time Warner Sports.
