'Cuse Cares Earns Chancellor's Award

The Syracuse athletics department's 'Cuse Cares Community Outreach program received the 2010 Chancellor's Awards for Public Engagement and Scholarship for its commitment to engagement with the community and Scholarship in Action. It is the 13th consecutive CAPES honor for the 'Cuse Cares program, which is steered by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Through 'Cuse Cares, SU student-athletes have participated in more than 2,000 hours of community service projects since the start of the 2009-10 academic year. Their initiatives addressed local and global concerns, from promoting literacy in urban environments to raising money for the people of Haiti.
“It is nice for our student-athletes to be recognized for their engagement in the Syracuse community,” said Director of Student-Athlete Support Services Kevin Wall. “Despite the demands of their time, our student-athletes are very passionate about doing what they can in the community. We hope to continue to grow the 'Cuse Cares program and strengthen our efforts to give back for their support of Syracuse Athletics.”
Members of the Orange worked closely with the Rescue Mission, Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, Syracuse Justice Center and various elementary schools. Along with donating their time and energy to support the mission of these local organizations, the student-athletes also spoke about the commitment and dedication required to be successful in college.
Over the course of the year, many of the teams developed a relationship with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which matches children with brain tumors to college teams. This work deeply impacted the student-athletes and inspired them to host a talent show event to raise awareness and money for the organization. The event took place on April 6th and proved to be a success.
The 'Cuse Cares Community Outreach Program allows student-athletes to give and to receive, to put the bold ideas of Scholarship in Action in motion and to share what they've learned in athletics with aspiring athletes in the community.
