PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse duo of senior Chris Daniello and junior Joel White were named BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday, April 19. It's the third sweep of the conference player of the week awards for Syracuse this season.
Daniello tallied nine points, including seven goals, in the Orange's wins against Cornell and Rutgers last week, while also collecting three ground balls and forcing two turnovers. Daniello tallied three goals, including the game-winner with no time left, to lift Syracuse over the Big Red (8-7) on April 13. He followed up the performance with a career-best six points, including tying his personal best with four goals, in an 11-5 win at Rutgers on April 18.
White averaged 7.5 ground balls and 3.0 caused turnovers per game in the two triumphs. He collected a season-high nine ground balls and tied his career best with three caused turnovers in the Orange's win at Cornell. White's ninth ground ball of the night came with less than 30 seconds to play and he tight-roped down the sideline, through three Cornell players, to clear the ball into the Orange's offensive end. It was a key play in the game as the possession resulted in Daniello's game-winner with no time remaining.
At Rutgers, White tied for the team lead with six ground balls. He also caused three more turnovers.
Next up for the Orange is BIG EAST foe Providence. Syracuse will host the Friars on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. It's the final regular-season home game for the Orange, which ends the year with back-to-back road games against Notre Dame and St. John's.
