SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Jenna Caira was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Caira was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors last week and is the first conference student-athlete to earn both Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week honors this season.
Caira, who had her first collegiate at bat on March 5, 2010, hit .357 this week with a double, three home runs, six runs scored and four RBI. She hit three home runs in a doubleheader at Cornell, including two in the first game, becoming the first player to do so since Amy Kelley in 2008.
The Toronto, Ontario native also set the tone for the Orange defensively, collecting three wins in the circle with a 0.70 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 20.0 innings pitched.
It is the first Player of the Week honor for the Orange this season and the first career Player of the Week award for Caira. She also earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll mention earlier this season for the week of March 15.
Caira and the Orange visit Louisville for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, April 21 at 1 p.m. The contest will be televised on ESPNU, marking the program's national television debut.
