2010 'Cuse Awards Nominees
The 2010 'Cuse Awards, a celebration of the accomplishments of Syracuse University student-athletes, will feature a diverse array of outstanding achievements and celebrate SU athletics most successful season in history. Nominees in 14 different categories include Orange All-Americans, coaches and rookies. Award winners will be announced Thursday night, April 29 during a gala awards show at the Landmark Theater in downtown Syracuse. In addition to the departmental awards, each sport will announce its individual team Cuse Award honoree. Non-athletic awards to be presented include Team G.P.A., the 'Cuse Cares Award for community service, the Syracuse 8 Award of Courage and the prestigious Soladay Awards, which marry the components of athletic achievement, scholarship and community service.
This year's awards show will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports and streamed live worldwide on SUAthletics.com beginning at 7:00 pm.
The 'Cuse Awards was established four years ago by Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross to celebrate the year's academic and athletic achievements of student-athletes.
“The Cuse Awards continues to grow every year,” Gross said. “It is inspiring to reflect on the accomplishments and to envision what is yet to come for our programs. Having this year's event broadcast live on Time Warner adds a new dimension to an extraordinary celebration.”
The awards include: Male and Female Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Comeback Athlete of the Year, Performance of the Year, Play of the Year, Game of the Year, Shot of the Year, Move of the Year, Defensive Play of the Year, Team of the Year, Most Improved Team, the Syracuse 8 Award of Courage and the Soladay Awards. The 'Cuse Awards will also honor first team All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, the teams with the highest collective G.P.A., the most points in community service and the most points in school spirit initiatives.
“There's a lot of input from the student-athletes, coaches and administrators,” said Roger Springfield, director of multi-media services and the producer of the 'Cuse Awards. “It's helpful to get information directly from the coaches because they're very passionate about their own athletes and they will sell them better than someone else can sell them.”
In addition to the honors and accolades, the show will feature three musical acts by student-athletes and a backstage reporter to give a behind-the-scenes look at the event.
For student-athletes such as Jenna Caira, a sophomore pitcher on the softball team and last year's winner of the Rookie of the Year award, the 'Cuse Awards represents an opportunity to see their hard work and dedication rewarded off the field.
“We all come together and it's the end of the year,” Caira said. “We all put that work in and it's a celebration of all of our hard work. It's a time when we get to relax and enjoy the great types of plays that people have made and to honor Syracuse University itself.”
