WASHINGTON – Junior defensive midfielder Joel White has been picked as one of the five finalists for the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy, which will be presented to the nation's top lacrosse player. White joins Ken Clausen (Virginia), Curtis Dickson (Delaware), Ned Crotty (Duke) and Kevin Crowley of Stony Brook as finalists for college lacrosse's most prestigious award.
White has had an All-America-caliber season as one of the nation's best longstick midfielders. He's the linchpin of an Orange unit that leads the nation in scoring defense (7.29 goals per game). Individually, White ranks sixth nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.14) and 15th in ground balls per game (5.07).
Offensively, he's contributed nine points, including six goals. He's scored twice in each of the last two games (at Notre Dame and at St. John's) to become the first SU defender since 2000 to record a two-goal game.
White has appeared in 49 games during his Syracuse career and has 197 ground balls. The 6-2 junior was named a first-team midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse earlier this year.
White and the other finalists are invited to the Tewaaraton Awards Banquet on Thursday, June 3 at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. where the winner of this year's award will be announced.
Syracuse begins its quest for its 12th NCAA Championship on Sunday, May 16. The second-seeded Orange will host Army in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
